Pigmentary conditions are disorders that affect the melanin-producing cells (melanocytes) in the skin, resulting in areas of hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, or depigmentation that alter the normal skin color and appearance.
- Involves dysfunction in melanocyte activity and melanin synthesis pathways
- Includes four main categories: hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, depigmentation, and mixed pigmentary disorders
- Most commonly affects sun-exposed areas but can occur anywhere on the body
- Can range from localized patches to widespread generalized involvement
- May be congenital, acquired, or develop secondary to other skin conditions
